The application of zinc layer anode to reinforced concrete structure has been well known for many years. This galvanic cathodic protection system was specified being a corrosion control system for general steel in concrete as well as civil structures.

Zinc anodes are mainly used in seawater and brackish water. Zinc anodes can be used in brackish water if the resistivity is not too high (approx. 1.5 Ωm). Zinc is more chemically stable than Aluminum and is therefore preferred by many in weakly brackish water environments.

The term "zinc" has become synonymous with sacrificial anodes, as zinc was the original material used for this purpose. But other metals, such as aluminum and magnesium, also act as sacrificial anodes.

Cathodic Protection, also referred to as a sacrificial cathode, is a technique used to control the corrosion of a metal surface by making it the cathode of an electrochemical cell. A simple method of protection connects protected metal to a more easily corroded " sacrificial metal " to act as the anode. The sacrificial metal then corrodes instead of the protected metal.

In cathodic protection, pieces of metal (known as Sacrificial Anode) are linked electrically to the ship’s hull. These anodes, are made of metals more reactive than the material used for the ship’s body and systems. Also known as sacrificial anodes, pencil anodes or engine anodes, these zinc rods are consumed by any electrolytic action that would otherwise attack and corrode your valuable equipment. A reinforcing steel core holds zinc in place until it's completely consumed. They come with NPT hex brass plugs. Zinc rods protect from corrosion and scaling in hot water applications. Ideal for use in salt water. They can also be used in cold water.
